To anyone with a hearing loss: At age 76, with a hearing loss since age 50, and hearing aids for some 25 years, I feel qualified and obligated to submit my experiences and suggestions, to you with a hearing loss.
For many years I refused to accept the need for two hearing aids. One will do, I said! Partly due to pride, and somewhat to the Alberta Government‚Äôs foolish regulation that you can function with only one ear, you may get subsidy for only one every five years. How the politicians consider one ear functioning at a time is beyond me. Anyway, I finally decide to go for both. What a benefit; balance, clarity and more complete hearing.
Next suggestion is regarding the type of hearing aid. I went through the usual basic (mono to digitals) and size fittings (full shell, to in-the-ear). I found the basics provided sufficient sound quality, but had many impediments; namely no ability to segregate noise and speech and the lack of automatic volume control.
Cost: Here is the stumbling block for many. After spending hundreds of dollars, often every five years or less, for repairs and renewals, I realized that the investment in two digitals will be more economical in the long run. Contact me in five year for proof!
Service: Here is the key to satisfaction. While my experiences with three companies and practitioners/professionals has been good, the best has been with Living Sounds Hearing Centre, and in particular with Mr. Greg Nedelec. Not only is his ability is evident but his patience, the most important factor, is key Patience during selection (we tried three different companies to obtain the particular unit that suits me), patience during fitting and patience during subsequent adjustments. Of course, your patience is also a factor. Many do not stay with the fitting attempts, the subsequent adjustments (made very easy with digitals, by the way), and communication with your professional.

As it turned out the gentlemen that taught the class was from Hong Kong and had an accent which would have made it very difficult to hear him in the classroom setting. However the device changed that situation for me. The device works really well for me. I was able to hear him very clearly. Dear Sir ‚Äď On Wednesday, April 30th, I responded to your ad in the Journal and attended your Centre. I was given a hearing test and a trial of your new Oticon. The Oticon is an excellent device, but I did not feel it had significant advantage over my present hearing aide.
My reason for writing is to commend your staff for their excellent reception. It was 5:00 pm. At the end of a long work day. Many of the shops were closing as I came in. Your staff were splendid! Donna at reception was expecting me, the audiologist was pleasant and competent, and the Oticon representative was charming. It was the nicest professional visit I have made in many years.
